ROUND ROCK - Round Rock El Amistad Club, a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1968, is announcing a Leadership Grant Program for residents of the Round Rock ISD community, effective immediately. The Grants which have a cap of $2,000 per individual are designed to assist residents that are applying for established, Central Texas Leadership Programs.

Ramiro Rea, Club President commented that El Amistad has a long-standing reputation for awarding post-secondary scholarships to graduating high school seniors in and around the Round Rock ISD community and that these Grants will be a natural extension in the development of community and civic leaders. Rea went on to say that the Club has awarded over $2M in scholarships to graduating high school seniors since its inception and that he hopes that some of these recipients will apply for the Leadership Grants as well.

Andy Martinez, a former President of El Amistad, led in the development of the Grant initiative and spoke on the parameters of the Program. Martinez described the Program’s eligibility requirements as having three criteria:

• A) Applicant must be a resident of the Round Rock ISD community
• B) Applicant must be at least 25 years of age
• C) Applicant must be gainfully employed and have an established two-year work record.

Leadership development is a cornerstone principal of the Amistad Club and this Program is aimed at ensuring that younger, potential leaders, who are at least twenty-five years of age, have the opportunity to understand the importance of being civically engaged. There are a number of excellent Leadership Programs in the area, such as the Hispanic Austin Leadership, the Leadership Round Rock and Leadership Austin Programs that would be eligible for funding he went on to say.

Rea is anticipating a strong interest from the young and educated Hispanic community, whose overall median age is 27, compared the mainstream median age of 37. He anticipates receiving applications as early as month-end and awarding Grants in the September timeframe. He closed out his comments by encouraging interested parties to go on the El Amistad website at www.elamistadclub.org for more information on how to apply for these Leadership Grants.
